LA Metro - Division 20 Portal Widening Turnback

EXPERIENCE HIGHLIGHTS

LA Metro - Division 20 Portal Widening Turnback

BACKGROUND:

The LA Metro Division 20 Portal Widening & Turnback Facility Project is a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing the Los Angeles Metro rail system's efficiency, capacity, and connectivity. This project involves critical improvements to one of the most important transit hubs in the region to accommodate growing ridership and improve the overall commuter experience.

The project aims to help with higher service levels on the Metro Red/Purple Lines. Metro is planning facility improvements, including a widening of the heavy rail tunnel south of the US-101 freeway and a new turnback facility in the Division 20 rail yard, allowing for improved service times.

KEY OBJECTIVES:

  • Capacity Expansion: The primary goal of the project is to increase the capacity of the rail system by widening the portal at Division 20. This allows for more trains to enter and exit the facility, improving the flow of rail traffic and reducing congestion.
  • Improved Connectivity: The project enhances connectivity within the Metro rail network, facilitating smoother transfers between different lines and modes of transportation, making it more convenient for passengers.
  • Reduced  Delays: By creating a turnback facility, trains can be efficiently      turned around at Division 20, reducing delays and ensuring a more reliable and on-time service for commuters.

KEY FEATURES:

  • Portal Widening: The project involves widening the rail portal at Division 20 to accommodate additional tracks and trains.
  • Turnback Facility: A turnback facility is constructed to enable trains to reverse direction at Division 20, improving operational flexibility.
  • Signaling and Systems: Modern signaling systems and rail infrastructure are implemented to support efficient operations.

WESCOM SOLUTIONS HIGHLIGHTS:

Wescom Solutions supported the Division 20 Portal Widening project with project management services. Wescom managed a team of professionals to address all aspects of rail transportation system construction and design. Our focus was creating a collaborative environment to bring all stakeholders together on technical resolutions to advance the project

Additionally, Wescom managed all aspects of systems design and construction, which included traction electrification, ductbank installation, communications, and train control. The Wescom team was actively engaged in the coordination of reviewing all systems submittals, responding to requests for information (RFIs), and ensuring that designs align with contract specifications, and local and federal regulations. Responsibilities also encompassed coordinating and managing the contractor's activities related to production and testing, while ensuring alignment with Metro Operations.

On an ad hoc basis, Wescom stepped in to help manage a team of Operations Support personnel to backfill Maintenance of Way (Wayside and Engineering) representatives for advancement of the project. Additionally, Wescom was responsible for the coordination and management of project track allocations. We oversaw the planning and coordination with all Metro stakeholders.
